Celebrating one year of our inspirational 16 Under 16 crew!

Its been 12 months since we met, find out what’s gone on in that time.

We’re celebrating one year since we found our extraordinary group of Eco enthusiasts and brought them all together at the Festival of Inspiration to celebrate the first year of 16 Under 16. We wanted to acknowledge this very special milestone with a round-up of highlights from our journey with the 16. We still see so much potential in growing our network of young environmentalists and we hope to continue to work with this special group and plan to continue building the profile of our 16 Under 16 initiative over the next 12 months.

Generation Greta meet 16 Under 16!

We’ve been championing youth social action for some time now but when Greta Thunberg burst into the world’s consciousness it opened the door to many opportunities for the media to talk about our amazing 16 Under 16 crew! In December we celebrated success with a 7-page editorial feature in The Green Parent which included mini profiles on each and every one of them. It was a glorious sight! The Daily Telegraph interviewed Heather Kent and Ella Turns for a mega feature in June and it was great to see Amy and Ella Meek in The Guardian alongside some incredible young activists the following week. Sam Gee and Helen Kaye-Bourne have contributed columns to Teach Secondary and CWB Magazine and we continue to grab any opportunity to profile the incredible work they are doing on behalf of your chosen eco passion.

Newsround

As part of our on-going media outreach to promote 16 Under 16 we secured the ‘Inspiring Kids’ spot on Newsround for Elizabeth who led the crew on one of her monthly litter picks in Birkenhead Park. It was a great afternoon and Elizabeth did a brilliant job in her interview which you can enjoy here.

Eco-schools Conference

In June, David Luke Schoolwear was a headline sponsor at the North West Eco Schools Conference. Over 400 hundred pupils from schools across the North West came together at Blackburn Rovers FC to participate in the Eco Schools Conference 2019. A jam-packed agenda of immersive eco activities including workshops and team challenges set the scene for the day. Pupils were given freedom the roam the conference Marketplace which was full of organisations such as David Luke Schoolwear, The Canal and River Trust, Biffa and Love My Beach offering interactive learning opportunities and amazing educational resources to help bring their area of eco expertise to life. Elizabeth Gadson and Heather Kent were guests of David Luke Schoolwear, acting as ambassadors for the ground-breaking 16 Under 16 program. It was a truly inspiring day and we hope to continue our involvement in the coming years. Download the images from the conference.

Lesson Plan presentation & teacher notes

It’s been a long-standing ambition of ours to create a high-quality classroom resource for teachers to use. In consultation with a primary school teacher we have created our very own lesson plan suitable for KS2 and KS3. Download our brand-new classroom resource by clicking here. You will find our lesson plan presentation 'Saving the planet one Blazer at a time', along with handy teacher notes. Why not ask your teacher if you can try out the new lesson plan and help your fellow pupils learn about where there school uniform comes from & how it can be made from recycled materials.
